The Anti-Drug?

It has come to my attention that the Canadian government, while trying to do away with smokers, has been paying millions to certain cigarette companies to keep the operations running well. We smokers here in Canada are already taxed excessively, under the guise that it's to deter the use of cigarettes, but I highly doubt it's to help the people. I think the truth is they want every last penny they can grab. Hell, 3 BMWs just aren't enough!
Taxation is never a deterrent for anything. Cigarettes are harder to quit than crack and cocaine, and charging 45% tax on them will do nothing but make middle class families go into the hole faster, no pun intended. And while smokers are getting poorer, the fatcats high up only get a larger paycheck. There are other ways to help people quit smoking, much better ways than bankrupting them. Instead of the obnoxious taxes, how about more anti-smoking programs?
There has to be a better way to try to get people to stop smoking than impoverishing them.
